Wildwood: A Journey Through Trees
published by Penguin
ISBN-10: 0141010010
Every so often you come across a writer whose prose has a mesmerising effect on you. Wildwood by Roger Deakin is a gem of a book which I happened to pick up by chance in Waterstones as I reached for it’s neighboor. Enticed by the title ‘Wildwood – A Journey Through Trees’ I randomly flicked through the pages and started reading.
The pages I read described the simple delights of observing roosting rooks whilst half in, half out of a tent, lying on the floor of a wood. Deakin’s captivating style of writing instantly made me reminisce of childhood adventures camping under blankets and made me long to be somehwere much greener than where I was presently stood.
Wildwood has been brightening up my mornings for the last couple of weeks. Slowly devouring a few pages at a time whilst the crammed bus negotiates it’s way through traffic to deposit me at my desk in the grim city centre.
Wildwood is crammed with useful snippits and facts that will be keenly devoured by anyone with a keen interest in nature and a particular interest in wood. This enchanting book is full of humour, wisdom and delightful observations and I recommend it to anyone that is looking to re-ignite their passion for the natural environment.
Wildwood will be finding it’s way into a few family and friends stockings this Christmas.
